short history of the Playbus
1981
Suffolk County Council gave Eye and District toy library a £7,000
grant to by a van. Vehicle equipped with cupboards, storage space.,
seats etc. Some toys bought and others given.
1982
January bus takes to road
of Mid Suffolk. Venue include pub car park, outside a tea room, on
an airfield, village halls. Receives grant of £700 from County Council.
1983
Playvan with problems,
seeking help to keep venture on the road. Playvan goes to mothers and
toddlers in isolated villages in Suffolk and offers playgroup facilities.
1985
Launch of "Playbox" 1934 Leyland Bus. Mobile toy library. £400 grant
awarded from Community Council of Suffolk.
1987
Playvan and Playbox combine to purchase Double Decker bus cost £4,000
1987 Playvan works around Mid Suffolk whilst refurbishing the bus.
1989
October 3rd launch of Pyramids
(Play for Youngsters in Rural Areas of Mid Suffolk).
1989
onwards - Double Decker
playbus travels around Mid Suffolk providing play facilities and a
meeting place for parents and carers living in isolated communities
in Mid Suffolk.
1990
Children in need grant
£3,500 to cover maintenance costs.
1995
Launch of two after school
clubs providing care for children aged 5 - 8 years after school. Clubs
fully funded for one year.
1996
Grant received to launch
health information services onboard.
1996
December. Successful National
Lottery Bid. Pyramids receives grant offer of £188,580 for the purchase
of a new vehicle, adaptation, refurbishment and furnishing of interior,
including seating and display areas, generator and heating etc.
1997
April. Pyramids validated
to accepted Nursery Vouchers.
1997
July. Pyramids goes through
OFSTED inspection (and survives!) 1997 August. Old vehicle sold for
£1,500.
1997
September. New Playbus
on the road. Dennis Lance chassis with Premier body. Overall cost £190,000.
1997
December. Villages hold their own launch celebrations 1998 February.
Official launch of new Playbus. 1998 July. Playbus successfully passes
OFSTED inspection.
1998
August. Pyramids works with Thornham Field Centre to run their first
August Playscheme.
1998
September. Our first Musical Fortnight. A musician boarded
the bus for two weeks to lead musical and singing actvities in each
of the villages we visited.
1998
December. Christmas Party
at Thornham Field Centre. Father Christmas gave each child a gift and
it was featured in the local newspaper.
1999
Summer. Musical Fortnight
and Summer Playscheme repeated.
1999
December.
Christmas Party at Kerrisons Training Centre with Father
Christmas and party entertainers.
2000
August Playscheme, November first bonfire party, December
Christmas party
2001
April Community Fund grant for a full time Playworker
on the bus, August Playscheme
2002
Government Nursery grant funding to give all pre-school
children free nursery education sessions boosts playbus
income with up to 60 children having one free session
per week on the Playbus providing vital income for a
whole term at a time. A new stop in Thwaite replaces
Stoke Ash. Lloyds TSB Grant awarded to replace drivers
seat with one including integral 3 point seatbelt for
drivers’ safety.
2003
We wish Gill well as she leaves and moves on to pastures
new, Sara takes on the role of Playleader and Jane Reeve
joins the Pyramids team as Playworker alongside Sara.
Gislingham stop is so busy that a second slot in the
timetable is added so that we run 3 sessions per fortnight
in the village to cater for demand. Local Network fund
grant provides new toys and equipment including many
items for children with special needs to boost play
activities on the Playbus and extend the toy hire library.
2004
The Community Fund grant ends, The Norton Trust awards
£5000 to provide a stop gap while long term plans
are made, temporary cost cutting measures include reduced
working hours for staff and a shorter working week for
the Playbus.
